Non-Invasive Tissue Tightening
Of the skin tightening procedures, the two that are best known are the procedures Thermage and Titan. They both aim to heat the deeper layer of the skin (the dermis). There is no peeling of the top layer of skin and the risk of pigmentation changes is low. The basic difference between the two procedures is that Thermage employs radiofrequency energy, while Titan uses infrared. Skin-tightening procedures seem to work best in patients who have thin faces who don’t quite yet need a facelift.
Thermage system employs the use of heat to stimulate collagen growth in problem areas. The results last for 3 months up to 2 years. Thermage is best suited for those who are starting to see signs of aginga and for people with active acne and acne scars. After the procedure there is a risk of burn, blistering, scarring, some redness and swelling.
Titan utilizes a safe, infrared light to heat the dermis well below the skin’s surface. This heating can cause immediate collagen contraction resulting in tighter skin. During the procedure, the skin’s surface (epidermis) is protected through continuous cooling with the Titan handpiece. After the procedure, new collagen growth results in further tightening with the improvement of lax skin, folds and lines.
Titan employs light energy because it provides a more uniform distribution of energy for heating the deep dermis than other energy sources, such as RF (radiofrequency).
